Question:   From NCERT NEET 2020

A species that was introduced for ornamentation but has become a troublesome weed in India :

1. Parthenium hysterophorus

2. Eichhornia crassipes

3. Prosopis juliflora

4. Trapa Spinosa

 Answer

2. Eichhornia crassipes

Eichhornia crassipes also known as water hyacinth native to the Amazon basin is an aquatic plant. It grows invasively throughout the water bodies covering all of the top surfaces. This devoids the aquatic life of oxygen resulting in a decline in the number of fish. It was introduced in Bengal for its beautiful flowers and leaves. Later it turned out to be an invasive weed that drains all of the oxygen from the water bodies resulting in the death of fish. In Bengal, fish makes a major supplement of food. Thus, this invasive weed is termed out to be highly problematic. It is also called “Terror of Bengal”.

Question:   From NCERT   Derived PYQ

The exotic species, which when introduced in India became notorious weed, is
A. Lantana camara
B. Eichhornia crassipes
C. Parthenium hysterophorus
D. All of these

                                                                 organisednotes.blogspot.com

 Answer

An invasive species is referred to as a non-native species that spreads from a point of introduction to invade the new habitat and alter it negatively. They are usually introduced for beneficial purposes but can lead to environmental, ecological, and economic damage. They pose a serious economic, social, and environmental threat. Thus, they need to be studied properly and managed sustainably.

Lantana camara belonging to Verbenaceae sp. a native species in South America was introduced to Indian habitats by the British as an ornamental plant. It was around 200 years ago when the Forest officials in different parts of the country watched helplessly the uncontrollable spread of this species. This invasive plant spread endlessly with all efforts for its control going in vain.

Parthenium hysterophorus which is a member of the aster family or Asteraceae sp. is a flowering plant that is native to the American tropics. It first appeared as an invader as a contaminant in wheat imported from America. The weed later turned out to be an invasive species that can grow on disturbed land, including roadsides. It can infect pastures and farmland becoming equally dangerous for all flora and fauna. It is also dangerous for humans. It leaves the soil where it grows infertile.

Therefore, from the above discussion, we can conclude that the right answer is option D.

1. Geneva protocol

2. Montreal protocol

3. Kyoto protocol

4. Gothenburg protocol

Subtopic:  Ozone Layer Depletion |

 Answer

2. Montreal protocol

Environmental Issues:Memorization tricks (4 min read) (organisednotes.blogspot.com)

Montreal protocol is the simpler name for "Montreal protocol on substances that deplete the Ozone layer" is the International treaty that aims for the protection of the Ozone layer by reducing the emission of chlorofluorocarbons into the atmosphere. It was signed on 26th August of 1987 and was made pursuant to the 1985 Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer.

Question:   From NCERT NEET 2019  Derived PYQ

If an agricultural field is liberally, irrigated for a prolonged period of time, it is likely to face a problem of :

1. Metal toxicity

2. Alkalinity

3. Acidity

4. Salinity

 Answer

4. Salinity

Irrigation should be optimal since the output of crops can be ruined even by over-irrigation. Since roots do not tolerate standing water, excess water contributes to waterlogging, hampers germination, increases salt concentration, and de- rooting. Thus, for the best cultivation, the correct method is to be used.

- The salinity problem is likely to be produced by prolonged liberal irrigation of agricultural fields.

- Salinity means that salt accumulates in soil and lowers the consistency of the soil and water.

- Salinity decreases the ability of the plant to absorb water, contributing to a reduction in the growth rate of the plant.

- Salinity causes salt stress in plants.

- Prolonged liberal irrigation results in nutrient depletion in the soil so that the plants do not grow properly.

- Irrigation provides the requisite moisture for development and growth, germination, and other related functions.

- In India, multiple cropping is not feasible because in most regions the rainy season is unique.

- The climate, however, supports cultivation throughout the year.

Which of the following is not one of prime health risks associated with greater UV

radiation through the atmosphere due to depletion of stratospheric zone?

1. Increased skin cancer

2. Reduced immune system

3. Damage to eyes

4. Increased liver cancer

 Answer

4. Increased liver cancer

Due to the depletion of the stratosphere layer the ozone layer present in this layer also gets depleted. And due to this depletion of the ozone layer ultraviolet rays from the sun can enter the earth’s atmosphere easily. These ultraviolet rays can cause mutation in the cell and change the structure of the genetic due to which they have some structural deformity and also functional deformity. These ultraviolet rays cause mutations in the eye cells and adversely affect the eye, they can change the shape and size of the rod cells and the cone cells which are present on the retina of the eye which is responsible for the vision of the eye.
These ultraviolet rays also cause mutations in the skin cells and due to which problems like skin cancer can be seen easily in our day to day life.
These radiations also cause harm to the immune cells of the human body, the mutations in these cells and reduce the immune response action of our body. The liver cancer is commonly caused by the excessive intake of alcohol for A long period of time on a regular basis and also causes liver cirrhosis, liver cancer is not commonly caused by the ultraviolet radiation.

Question:   From NCERT NEET  Derived PYQ

Eutrophication is often seen in

1. fresh water lakes

2. ocean

3. mountains

4. deserts

 Answer

1. fresh water lakes

Eutrophication cannot happen in running water bodies because it requires the sedimentation of the nutrient in a specific place with less toxicant.

Eutrophication is the normal interaction of maturing of a freshwater lake by supplement enhancement of its water. With time, streams depleting into the lake present supplements like nitrogen and phosphorus from manures, which empower the development of green growth which exhausts the degree of broken oxygen in the lake which thus upsets the oceanic life.

Subsequent to seeing the image of youngsters swimming in an ocean of kelp, you will unquestionably think about what peculiar marvel has hit the shore of Qingdao in eastern China. It is an unusual development of green growth, a reasonable appearance of an interaction called eutrophication. "Eutrophication is an improvement of water by supplement salts that makes underlying changes in the biological system like expanded creation of green growth and amphibian plants, consumption of fish species, general weakening of water quality, and different impacts that decrease and block use.
