Question: From NCERT NEET Derived PYQ
What is the major conduit for energy flow in an aquatic ecosystem?
1. Grazing food chain
2. Detritus food chain
3. Sun
4. Hydrothermal vents
Answer ▽
1. Grazing food chain
Solution:
Food chain is the linear sequence of organisms where latter eats the former.
There are two types of food chains: grazing food chain (GFC) and detritus food chain (DFC).
GFC starts with green plants as producers and ends at secondary carnivores.
The DFC begins with dead organic matter and is made up of decomposers which meet their energy and nutrient requirements by degrading dead organic matter or detritus.
In an aquatic ecosystem GFC is the major conduit for energy flow,
while in a terrestrial ecosystem, a much larger fraction of energy flows through DFC than through the GFC.

(iii). Some of the organisms of GFC are facultative decomposers
1. i and iii
2. i and ii

Which of the following statement is incorrect?
1. Only three top-carnivores are supported in an ecosystem based on production of nearly 6 million plants.
2. Pyramid of biomass shows a sharp increase in biomass at higher trophic levels.
3. Pyramid of biomass is inverted if small standing crop of phytoplankton supports large standing crop of zooplankton.
4. Pyramid of energy is always upright.

Question: From NCERT NEET Derived PYQ
If the available energy at first trophic level is 10000 J then how much trophic levels it could support further?
1. 2
2. 3
3. 4
4. 5
Answer ▽
2. 3
According to the 10 percent law, only 10% of the energy is transferred to each trophic level from its lower trophic level. If 10,000 joules of energy is available to the producer, then only 1000 joules of energy will be available to the primary consumer and only 100 joules of energy will be available to the secondary consumer. The energy available with the tertiary consumer will be 10 joules of energy.

Which of the following statement is incorrect?
1. Any calculations of energy content, biomass or numbers, has to include all organisms at that trophic level.
2. The base of each pyramid represents the producers or the first trophic level while the apex represents tertiary or top level consumer
3. The trophic level represents a functional level, not a species as such.
4. A given species occupy only one trophic level in the same ecosystem at the same time.
